School Daze - Part 1

Billy didn't want to move out of state, but his dad had gotten a big job in another city. He was upset about it. His parents never cared about what he wanted. All of his memories were in this small town where he grew up. He had a life here with plenty of friends. He could never imagine leaving.

He watched the trees pass him by, as the school bus roared through the winding rural roads. He had just experienced his very last day at Little Pine High –in the middle of the school year even. The tears rolled down his cheeks. He squeezed his eyes tight and wished more than anything that he could somehow stay.

After managing to calm himself down, he opened his eyes. He could still see the trees sweeping past the windows, but something was different. Hadn't he been sitting further back in the bus?

Billy lifted his head, and locks of light brown hair obscured his vision. Confused as one would be, he grabbed the hair to move it out of the way. But he felt it tug on his scalp.

That's when he noticed the rest of his body. He wasn't wearing the same clothes anymore. In fact, he was wearing girl clothes! Was this a dream? Embarrassed, Billy folded his arms in front of his top. His chest felt ...different, as if he had put on weight just there. But no. It couldn't be...

The backpack. The clothes. The hair. It all seemed awfully familiar.

"Miranda!" the bus driver called, "Hello?? Miranda. This is your stop."

Billy noticed other students giggling amongst themselves, looking at him. Why was the driver talking to him? Was he somehow in Miranda's body?

Hesitantly, Billy grabbed the backpack next to him and stumbled to the front of the bus.

"Hey, you don't look too good," the bus driver told him, "Take care of yourself, okay?"

"Okay," Billy croaked.

He stepped out into the yard of what he assumed was Miranda's house. The bus stormed away, leaving him all alone.

Was this real? Had his wish to stay in Little Pine been granted in some absurd, twisted way? Billy had no idea, yet he felt he had no choice but to find out.
