Time is of the Essence - Part 1

“Kyle! Dude. Did we just swap into Mom and Dad before they had us?”

Eddy’s brother, Kyle, sighed, “Looks like it, bro.”

Eddy stared at his hands—no, his father's hands—in disbelief. They were younger, smoother, but unmistakably Dad's. He glanced up at Kyle, who now inhabited their mother's body, complete with her signature auburn curls and freckled nose.

"This is insane," Eddy muttered, "You– you’re Mom!"

Kyle ran his fingers through the auburn curls, a look of bewilderment on his face, "And you're Dad. This is… trippy."

Eddy stood up, wobbling slightly as he adjusted to his father's taller frame.

He caught sight of their reflection in a nearby window and did a double-take, "Whoa. We look exactly like those old photos in the family album."

"Yeah, the ones from when they first started dating," Kyle added, his voice higher-pitched than usual.

He cleared his throat, uncomfortable with the unfamiliar sound.

Eddy's mind raced. "Okay, so we're in the past. How do we get back?"

Kyle shrugged, the gesture looking oddly familiar on their mother's body, "I have no idea. Last thing I remember, we were messing around with that weird gadget in Dad’s secret attic box."

“Shit, dude” Eddy's eyes widened, "Where did it even go?"

"I don't know," Kyle replied, "It's not here. It must have been left in our time."

Eddy gulped, "Okay, let's think. We're in the past, in our parents' bodies, with no way back. What do we do?"

Kyle bit his lip, a habit that looked eerily like their mother's, "Well, we can't mess anything up. If we change the past, we might not even be born."

"Right," Eddy nodded, pacing the room, "So we have to act like Mom and Dad would. We can't let anyone know we're not really them."

Kyle carefully traced his mother’s facial features in the mirror, "But how do we do that? We don't know everything about their lives back then."

Eddy ran a hand through his father's hair, feeling the unfamiliar texture. "We'll have to wing it, I guess. Just… act in love or something?"

“No way,” Kyle gasped, “I couldn’t…”

“Kyle, we don’t know when Dad gets a hold of the device. We have to keep the timeline intact until we figure out how to get back…"

Kyle brought his shaking hands to his womanly chest, "This is so weird. I can't believe we have to pretend to be Mom and Dad."

He took a deep breath and squeezed his mother’s breasts, “Whoa, dude… That feels…”

Kyle abruptly stopped mid-sentence, his eyes widening in horror as he realized what he was doing. He quickly dropped his hands and took a step back from the mirror, his face flushing bright red.

"Oh god, I'm so sorry Mom," he muttered under his breath.

Eddy grimaced, averting his eyes, "Dude, seriously? Can you not?"

"Sorry, sorry!" Kyle said, holding up his hands defensively, "This is just... a lot to process."

Eddy shook his head, trying to refocus, "Okay, let's think. What do we know about Mom and Dad from this time? Where were they living? What were their jobs?"

Kyle paced, "I think… this was just after they both graduated from college, right?"

"Yeah, that seems about right,” Eddy continued, “Oh, hey! You were born like a year from now.”

Kyle's eyes widened in horror. "Oh god, you're right. That means they... I mean we... are supposed to..."

He trailed off, unable to finish the thought.

Eddy held up his hands, stopping Kyle mid-sentence, "Let's not think about that right now. We need to focus on figuring out how to get back to our own time before anything like... that... becomes an issue."
