We reached a classroom and she pulled me inside. "Well, wake up girl! It's time to plan our attack. Jake's finally single and you've been waiting for this chance forever. We need to strategize!"
My heart sank. Not only did I have to pretend to be Amber, but now I was expected to pursue some guy I'd never even met? This was getting more complicated by the second.
I slid into a desk, my mind reeling. How was I supposed to flirt with a boy when I was actually a
boy myself? The whole situation was absurd.
"Earth to Amber," the blonde girl waved her hand in front of my face. "Hello? Are you even listening to me?"
"Sorry," I mumbled, "What were you saying?"
She rolled her eyes. "I was saying we should invite Jake to Brittany's party this weekend. It's the perfect opportunity for you to make your move!"
I nodded weakly, "Right, yeah. That sounds... great."
Just then, a tall, athletic-looking guy walked into the classroom. My friend nudged me excitedly.
"There he is," she whispered, "Jake alert!"
I felt my face flush as Jake's eyes met mine. He gave a small smile and wave before taking his seat a few rows ahead.
My heart was pounding. Amber …liked this guy?
I felt a strange mix of emotions as Jake took his seat. On one hand, I could objectively see that he was attractive - tall, athletic, with tousled brown hair and a charming smile. But on the other hand, I was still a 12-year-old boy inside, completely unprepared for the complexities of teenage romance.
"Oh my god, did you see that?" the blonde girl whispered excitedly, "He totally smiled at you!"
I nodded weakly, trying to look excited while my stomach churned with anxiety. How was I supposed to flirt with a guy when I had no idea how to even be a girl?
