When the bell rang, I gathered my things, relieved to have made it through the first class without any major slip-ups. But as I stood to leave, Jake approached me.
"Hey Amber," he said with a smile, "How was your break?"
I froze, my mind going blank.
"Um, it was... good. Thanks," I managed to stammer out.
He nodded, seeming a bit thrown off by my awkwardness, "Cool. So, I was wondering if you wanted to grab coffee after school? Maybe catch up?"
My eyes widened in panic. A date? Already? I glanced at the blonde girl, who was practically vibrating with excitement behind Jake's back.
"I, uh..." I hesitated, desperately trying to think of an excuse.
But the hopeful look in Jake's –and the blonde girl’s eyes made me falter. What if I ruined things for Amber? For all I knew, it could’ve been my last day in her body.
I swallowed hard, my heart racing. "S-sure," I managed to say, my voice coming out higher than I intended, "Coffee sounds great."
