A Second Chance - Part 5

Once we were back at their apartment, Sarah and I went through the motions of making dinner with whatever we found in the couple’s fridge, while Lily played with her toys in the living room.

I tried to focus on the task at hand, but I kept getting distracted by the unfamiliar sensations of my new body. The way my hips swayed as I moved around the kitchen, the way my chest jiggled as I chopped, the softness of my hands, the strands of long hair that kept falling in my face.

Sarah noticed my distraction and raised an eyebrow, "You okay there, uh... honey?"

I nodded quickly, feeling my cheeks flush, "Yeah, just... adjusting."

We managed to cobble together a decent pasta dinner, and soon we were all seated around the table. Lily chattered away about her day at the park, while Sarah and I exchanged nervous glances.

After dinner, we went through the motions of Lily's bedtime routine.

I settled onto Lily's bed, the little girl snuggling up against me as I opened the book she had chosen. The warmth of her small body against mine felt strange yet comforting. I began to read, my new voice soft and melodious as I recited the familiar children's tale.

As I read, I couldn't help but marvel at how natural this felt. The weight of Lily against me, the sound of my voice as I read the story, the gentle stroke of my hand through her hair - it all felt so … maternal.

Sarah stood in the doorway, watching us with a mixture of fascination and unease on Allan's face. I could see the conflict in her eyes - the strangeness of seeing her partner in another woman's body, acting as a mother to a child that wasn't ours.

Lily giggled at all the funny voices I made for each character and snuggled closer to me, her eyes drooping with sleepiness.

As I finished the story and closed the book, Lily yawned and whispered, “I love you, Mommy.”

My heart swelled at those words, even though I knew they weren’t meant for me. But it didn’t stop me from responding, “I love you too, sweetie.”
