Wayne had always been fascinated by the ReLife memory simulation machine, a marvel of technology that could store and replay memories with perfect clarity. Most people used it to preserve their own memories, to replay happy moments or relive important events. But Wayne had a different idea in mind.
He wanted to experience other people's memories.
It was an unconventional desire, but Wayne couldn't shake the idea from his mind. He longed to step into someone else's shoes, to see the world through their eyes, to feel their emotions. And the ReLife machine offered him the perfect opportunity to do so.
The problem was that it wasn’t strictly allowed. But where there’s a will there’s a way. So, late at night, while his older sister was sleeping, Wayne crept into her bedroom, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew Sarah kept her ReLife device on her nightstand, always within reach. As he tiptoed closer, he could make out her peaceful form in the darkness, her chest rising and falling with slow, steady breaths.
With trembling hands, he carried the device back to his room and connected it to his own console. A menu of stored memories appeared on the screen. Wayne hesitated for just a moment before selecting one labeled "First Kiss - Jake, Summer 2045."
As he slipped on the headset, guilt and excitement battled within him. But curiosity won out. He took a deep breath and pressed play.
The world around Wayne dissolved, replaced by a warm summer evening. He found himself sitting on a park bench, the setting sun painting the sky in vibrant oranges and pinks. But it wasn't his body he inhabited—it was Sarah's.
He could feel her nervous excitement, the butterflies in her stomach as she glanced at the boy beside her. Jake. Wayne recognized him from family photos, Sarah's high school boyfriend. Jake's hand tentatively reached for Sarah's, and Wayne felt a jolt of electricity as their fingers intertwined.
"Sarah," Jake said softly, his voice cracking slightly, "I really like you."
Wayne felt Sarah's heart race, her palms grow sweaty. He was struck by how visceral the experience was, how real it felt. This wasn't just watching a memory—he was living it.
Jake leaned in closer, his eyes fixed on Sarah's lips. Wayne panicked for a moment, unsure of how to react.
Wayne panicked for a moment, unsure if he could go through with this intimate moment. But the simulation pulled him along, Sarah's emotions and reactions guiding his responses.
Their lips met, soft and hesitant at first, then with growing confidence. Wayne was overwhelmed by the sensation, the flood of emotions—excitement, nervousness, joy—that coursed through Sarah's body.
The kiss deepened, and Wayne felt a rush of affection for Jake that wasn't his own. It was strange and exhilarating to experience such intimate emotions from someone else's perspective. He was so caught up in the moment that he almost forgot it wasn't real, that he was an intruder in his sister's most private memory.
As the kiss ended, Wayne felt a mix of Sarah's lingering euphoria and his own growing unease. The simulation faded, leaving him back in his darkened bedroom, his heart racing for entirely different reasons now.
He sat there for a long moment, processing what he'd just experienced. It had been thrilling, yes, but also deeply unsettling.
With shaking hands, he scrolled through the menu of memories. Birthday parties, vacations, moments of triumph and sorrow—Sarah's entire life was laid out before him. His finger hovered over another memory.
“Losing my virginity - Summer 2045”
Wayne's finger trembled over the memory title. His heart raced, a mix of curiosity and shame coursing through him. He knew he was crossing a line, violating his sister's privacy in the most intimate way possible. Yet the temptation was overwhelming.
So he pushed it. The world around Wayne dissolved once again, but this time, he found himself in Sarah's dimly lit bedroom. The same bedroom he had snuck into moments earlier.
Soft music played in the background, and candles flickered on the nightstand. Wayne felt Sarah's nervous anticipation, her heart pounding in her chest.
Jake was there, looking both eager and uncertain. As he leaned in to kiss Sarah, Wayne was hit with a wave of conflicting emotions. Part of him wanted to pull away, to stop this invasion of his sister's most private moment. But Sarah's feelings were too strong, too real to resist.
