Pool Party - Part 1

The world didn't change with a flash of light or a crack of thunder. It shifted with a sickening, internal drop—like a high-speed elevator snapping its cables in the dark, leaving your stomach floating three feet above your spine.

One second, he was leaning against the cool, painted metal of the garage door, holding a lukewarm can of local IPA, idly watching his mom and her best friend laugh by the edge of the flagstone patio while her two teenagers—his own high school peers—splashed and laughed in the deep end of the pool. The next, his vision reeled violently. His inner ear spun completely out of alignment, and his feet felt suddenly, terrifyingly light on the sun-baked concrete, as if gravity itself had been dialed back by half. He stumbled, dropping his beer. The aluminum can clattered against stone with a dull thwack, spattering golden foam and bitter hops across his ankles. He reached out blindly to catch himself, his fingers slamming hard against the dark wicker arm of a lounge chair.

The air hit him next—a thick, suffocating wave of pool chlorine, charbroiled hamburger fat, and sun-heated slate. But right beneath those familiar backyard smells was something far more immediate, hovering half an inch from his nose: the sweet, greasy scent of coconut oil, expensive floral perfume, and the sharp citrus bite of warm tequila. He blinked hard, trying to shake the heavy, velvet fog clinging to his brain.

The patio sat lower. The glass dining table sat three inches higher against his line of sight than it had a fraction of a second ago. When he tried to adjust his stance to keep from falling, his center of gravity was completely, terrifyingly wrong. It wasn't centered in his broad chest and shoulders anymore; it was pulled far down into the deep, heavy curve of his hips, causing his knees to knock together awkwardly and his ankles to wobble inside a pair of narrow, high-heeled leather sandals.

Panic flared hot in his chest. He looked down to steady his hands on the wicker chair.
They weren't his hands.

Where his broad, calloused knuckles and tanned wrists should have been, there were two delicate, silky-smooth hands. The fingers were long and slender, pale against the dark furniture, topped with neatly manicured nails coated in a glossy, dusty-rose lacquer.

A sharp gasp caught in his throat, but the breath didn't expand his chest the way it usually did. His torso was tightly bound. A high-cut, deep-black two-piece bikini wrapped snugly around his ribs and hips, holding everything firm and exposed to the unrelenting midday glare. Resting directly beneath his chin were two soft, heavy breasts—full, supple mounds rising and falling erratically against the thin elastic Lycra with every rapid, terrified breath he drew. The black fabric was damp, digging into the tender crease beneath her chest, pulling tight around a ribcage far smaller, lighter, and more sensitive than his own.
He looked further down. Her waist nipped in sharply above wide, soft hips that flared out into long, smooth, unblemished thighs. Her stomach was completely bare, firm and flat, shimmering with a light sheen of sun-warmed coconut oil. Every breath made her navel twitch, exposing soft skin that vibrated with intense, raw physical sensitivity.

His hands shook as he raised them to his face. Smooth, poreless skin. High, subtle cheekbones. Strands of long, damp blonde hair tipped with sun-bleached highlights fell across her bare shoulders, tickling the ultra-sensitive skin at the nape of her neck.

No. No, no, no.

He turned his head slowly, every movement feeling delayed, as if he were submerged in warm water. Sitting three feet away in a shaded lounger, adjusting a pair of designer sunglasses, was his mom. Her face was flushed with an unprecedented, giddy energy, her eyes sparkling behind the dark lenses.

"Look at you!" she squealed softly, leaning forward and placing a hand over her heart with an ecstatic, breathless grin. She reached out, playfully pinching the plush side of his waist before grabbing the glass pitcher to top off his tumbler with a heavy splash of margarita. "God, it actually worked! Look at us! I feel like we're twenty-five again—you look insanely hot in that suit, sweetie! Look at those legs!"
He stared in paralyzed silence at the condensation running down the side of the glass.

She didn't know. She thought she was talking to her lifelong best friend. They had planned some impossible, secret experiment to regain their youth—except somehow, during the shift, he had been pulled into the swap instead of her friend.

To make matters infinitely more terrifying, a loud cannonball splash erupted from the pool just ten feet away. Her two teenage kids—a guy and a girl he went to school with, people he had known as classmates for years—climbed out of the water dripping wet, laughing as they grabbed towels from the rack. They glanced over at the patio, giving him a casual, offhand nod: "Hey Mom."

The sheer surreal taboo of it slammed into him like a freight train. He was inhabiting the body of his peers' mother, standing in her tiny black bikini right in front of them, expected to act like their parent while carrying the physical frame of a woman they had known their entire lives.

Before he could pull together enough breath to speak, a wave of intense, liquid heat flushed up through his throat and into his ears. His vision lagged a half-second behind his head movements. He was an adult guy who could casually drink four or five heavy craft beers without feeling more than a comfortable buzz, but this body—her body—was an absolute lightweight. The single margarita she had been sipping before the switch was already surging through her bloodstream, melting his internal defenses into a heavy, uninhibited haze.

He knew he had to talk, but more than that, he had to play her. If he acted like a panicked guy right now, they'd call an ambulance. He had to mimic her—her soft, breathy voice, her lingering laughter, her effortless, sensual poise.

He opened his mouth to speak, consciously softening his vocal cords, trying to channel her signature breezy cadence:

"I’m... I'm good."

He winced inwardly at the pitch. The sound that escaped was a light, sultry, distinctly feminine rasp that vibrated deep in her small throat. He swallowed hard, crossing her long legs at the knee—a natural feminine posture that sent her smooth thighs sliding against each other with a dizzying, warm friction.
He tried again, tilting her head with what he hoped looked like her casual charm. "I mean... I'm good, Elena."

His mom—sitting just inches away in a bright floral cover-up, practically glowing with the secret high of their shared youth experiment—erupted into a light, jovial laugh.

"Since when do you call me Elena? You’re totally smashed already, aren’t you? I told you David makes those way too strong." She leaned in close, the rich, familiar smell of her sunblock filling his nose as she lowered her voice to an excited whisper. "Anyway, as I was saying... Mark tried that thing you recommended. You know, the oil? God, I thought I was going to die laughing..."

He sat frozen on the wicker edge, forcing himself to adopt her habit of twirling a strand of golden hair around a manicured finger. The tight bikini bottom dug steadily into her soft, curvaceous hips. He was forced to sit there, dizzy and flushed, listening to his own mother share unvarnished, shockingly candid details about her marital sex life—speaking to him as if he were her gorgeous female confidante celebrating their young, alluring bodies, all while her teenage kids lounged on towels nearby, completely oblivious that their friend was now occupying their mom's skin.

A pair of wet, broad hands suddenly settled onto the bare, oiled skin of his lower back.

He flinched, a sharp intake of air expanding her full chest against the Lycra top.

"Woah, easy babe," a deep, relaxed voice chuckled directly behind his left ear.

It was David—her husband. David smelled like pool chlorine, charcoal smoke, and cedarwood cologne. He leaned down over the lounger, his damp, hair-flecked chest pressing briefly against her bare upper back, dropping a heavy, affectionate kiss right on the smooth slope of her shoulder.

"You look tense. You need another dip in the pool to cool off?" David asked, his large, calloused hands sliding around her narrow waist, his thumbs resting right on the dip above her flared hips.

Across the small table, his mom watched the interaction. Her lips curled into a sly, conspiratorial grin as she took a slow sip of her drink, thoroughly entertained by what she assumed was her best friend's sudden, unusual bashfulness around her own husband now that they were feeling young and desirable again.
He forced himself to lean back slightly into David's touch, copying her playful, affectionate nature. He let out her soft, melodic laugh. "I'm... I'm fine," he managed to murmur, her breathy tone carrying an effortless, alluring purr. He looked up at David through long, darkened eyelashes. "Just... a little lightheaded."

"Told you," his mom chimed in playfully, winking at David. "She's a total lightweight today."
David chuckled, his fingers giving her waist a gentle, possessing squeeze before letting go. "Alright. Don't melt out here."

For the next hour, he tried desperately to keep his footing as the afternoon blurred. He stayed quiet, floating on the outer margins of the poolside chatter, leaning heavily on her subtle mannerisms—running a slender hand through her blonde hair, crossing and uncrossing her long legs, arching her soft back when she leaned in to take a sip of water. But her lightweight body couldn't handle the sun or the alcohol; every sensory detail was turned up to an unbearable volume. He felt the sharp prickle of the sun baking her exposed stomach, the heavy slide of damp blonde strands against her spine, and the casual, routine touches from David as he walked back and forth with plates of grilled chicken, while her teenagers bantered with David about summer plans.

The dam broke near five o'clock. The sun had dipped behind the treeline, casting long, cool shadows across the lawn.

His mom leaned over the table, nudging her bare knee with her foot. "Hey. Remember that summer in Cape Cod? When we got those awful sunburns on the tops of our feet?"

Drunk, disoriented, and desperate for a single thread of real ground to stand on, his brain short-circuited.
"No," he blurted out softly, looking straight into his mom's eyes. "That was the summer you took me to the ER for poison ivy. I was nine."

The casual laughter instantly died on his mom’s lips. She froze. Her drink stopped halfway to her mouth. Her eyes narrowed, searching his face with a sharp, piercing intensity that stripped away all the afternoon's playful joviality in a single second. She looked at the awkward, rigid way he was holding his arms over her chest, the unnatural tuck of her legs, and the raw, unadulterated terror in her eyes.

A cold, heavy silence stretched between them over the sound of the splashing pool.

"Wait..." she whispered, her voice dropping an octave into something trembling and deep. "What did you just—"

"Babe! Dinner’s ready!" David’s voice boomed from the patio grill, shattering the silence like glass. "Come on, everyone, grab a plate before the burgers get cold!"

His mom didn't move for three agonizing seconds. Her gaze remained locked onto his, probing, searching, dissecting. Then, very slowly, the absolute shock on her face melted into a slow, utterly baffled, and deeply amused smirk.

She stood up, smoothing down her cover-up. "Go get changed out of that wet suit," she murmured, her voice laced with a dark, unspoken code. "Master bedroom upstairs. I'll bring you a dry shirt."
