They’d never been close, not the way little sisters and big brothers were supposed to be—the way their parents described them to relatives, the way strangers always assumed. The three-year gap between them might as well have been a decade, and the difference only widened after both of them hit puberty, though in diametrically opposite ways. Eli, the elder, grew puffy in the face and shoulders. Lily, meanwhile, was all angles and light. She radiated: her hair, her laugh. She was the kind of girl mothers in the neighborhood would coo over—oh, she’s going to break hearts—while their sons squirmed and blushed. And Eli, in the background, nursed a private, mortifying envy. Shamefully, he pictured himself in her place, at the vanity, coaxing his own hair into those effortless waves, coaxing those impossible legs smooth and bare. He’d always been a little obsessed with the idea—what if he’d been born the girl, and Lily the oafish older brother? Would he have gotten to be pretty, too? Wou...

The Magic Pebble - Chapter 2

Seizing the Moment

The first thing Tom noticed was the heavy, sweltering heat of a Parisian morning. The air conditioning in their tiny boutique hotel room overlooking the bustling streets of Saint-Germain had given out overnight, leaving the air thick, sticky, and smelling of warm asphalt and croissants. But the second thing he noticed was far more alarming: the weight of his own hair. It was long, soft, and tickled his collarbone—a sensation he had never experienced in his eighteen years of having a buzzed fade. He reached up to brush it away, but the hand that moved was wrong. The fingers were slender, the nails painted a clean, soft lavender. He froze. His heart hammered, but the rhythm felt lighter, faster, contained in a ribcage that felt entirely too narrow and remarkably delicate. Slowly, carefully, he turned his head on the flat, firm pillow. Just inches away, sleeping on his side under the thin linen sheet, was himself. Or rather, it was his own face—slack-jawed, a thin line of drool pooling on...

The Magic Pebble - Part 4

TV Mom

The living room was a sanctuary of soft shadows and the blue flickering light of the television. David sat on the edge of the sofa, his six-year-old son, Toby, already half-asleep against his shoulder. On the screen, the show The Dream Wing was reaching its nightly climax. The lead actress, Simone Vane, was portraying "Claire," the perfect, gentle mother. David watched her with a quiet, guilty intensity. He’d never admit it to his wife, but he found Simone Vane incredibly attractive. There was a warmth to her on-screen presence that he found himself looking forward to every evening. He felt a twinge of embarrassment just thinking it—crushing on a TV mom while his own kid napped beside him. "I wish life was that simple," David murmured, his voice thick with exhaustion. Then, the air changed. A low-frequency hum vibrated through his teeth, and the smell of ozone filled the room. The TV screen didn't just show the kitchen anymore; it seemed to be the kitchen. With ...

Couple Swap - Part 1

“I can’t believe that our kids didn’t notice our body swap!” “I know! I thought maybe Josh and Elina would be onto us, but they didn’t suspect a thing.” “What can I say? I guess we do know each other pretty well!” “I guess we do,” I bit my lip, “So what now, now that the kids have gone to bed?” “Well, Melinda,” my wife addressed me by her own name, “What do we normally do when the kids have gone to bed?” She took a step towards me, resting her hand on my waist and drawing me closer, “Gosh, I am so lucky to have such a …beautiful wife…” “Oh?” I couldn't help but giggle, “That’s nothing compared to how handsome you are, Dave.” “I was thinking... Why don’t we swap back tomorrow instead?” Melinda tucked her long hair behind my ears, “Just one night to see what it’s like to be each other completely…” I let out a small gasp, as I felt her hand reach one of my breasts. “You okay?” Melinda asked with concern when she noticed my reaction. “Yeah...just a weird feeling,” I replied honestly, “...

Two's Company

Kyle and Jordan had been close since they were 6. Now 12-years-old, their parents –neighbors on a dead-end suburban lane– trusted the boys with entire afternoons and evenings unsupervised, and the two boys had mapped every bush, fence, and crawlspace within three blocks by the end of July. It was during one of their bored, meandering explorations that they stumbled across the pendant. They'd been poking around in the attic above Jordan's garage, when they found an odd, heavy amulet tangled in a shoelace. The pendant itself was unremarkable—cheap brass, glassy red stone—but when Kyle looped it around his neck, a jolt of static ran through the both of them. Then they suddenly swapped bodies. At first, they panicked: Jordan, as Kyle, screamed and flailed; Kyle, in Jordan, gawked at his own face. But after the first terror wore off, the boys realized they could swap back by touching the pendant together and thinking hard about their own names. It became a secret hobby—a new game. T...

All I Want For Christmas

The snow fell in heavy, silent flakes against the windows of the old family estate, a picturesque scene that usually filled Mark with a sense of peace. But this year, sitting in the armchair by the fire, he felt only a hollow ache. Across the room, his sister, Emily, was the picture of suburban perfection. She was radiant in a cream-colored cashmere sweater, her laughter ringing out as she played with her two toddlers. Her husband, David—tall, broad-shouldered, and looking at her with an intensity that made Mark’s chest tighten—leaned against the mantle. Mark envied it all: the house, the love, the sheer belonging. That night, as Mark lay in his childhood bed, the air grew unnaturally cold. Three misty, indistinct figures coalesced at the foot of his bed: the Ghosts of Christmas Past. "You desired her life," they whispered, their voices echoing inside his skull. "Now, her life will become yours. You will know what she knows. You will feel what she feels." The transf...

A Year In - Finale

The back patio smelled of cut grass and the faint, sweet decay of late August. Leo sat in the wicker glider, a light linen shawl draped over his shoulders to ward off the early evening chill. He was forty-eight now in this body. The blonde hair was cut shorter, elegant and silver-threaded at the temples, and there were fine, soft lines etched around the corners of his eyes. He wore a loose-fitting, sage-green shirt and comfortable linen trousers. His hands rested quietly in his lap, the gold wedding band worn thin and smooth from a decade of domestic life. Out on the lawn, nine-year-old Maya was running after a golden retriever, her laughter a bright, clear bell ringing through the quiet yard. She had David’s dark, serious eyes, but her chin—and the specific, stubborn way she held her shoulders when she ran—belonged entirely to the woman in the wicker glider. "She's getting too fast for the dog," a voice said from the screen door. David stepped out onto the patio, carryin...
